About the Wine
Family owned and operated, Poor Ranch has been farmed by the same family since the late 1800’s, making the Poor family one of the first homesteaders in the area to plant wine grapes. Certified organic and dry-farmed, the yields are low and the fruit is impeccable. The inland microclimate means the vines see daily swings of up to forty degrees, allowing a long maturation and retention of acids and complexity in a seemingly warm climate. Half of the fruit remained whole cluster and was added first to the stainless steel fermenter, with the other half destemmed and added on top. The first couple of days the must was chilled to cold soak, then naturally allowed to warm and begin fermentation. A combination of pump-overs and punchdowns were used to aerate and gently extract structure and tannins. Once dry, it was pressed and racked into neutral oak barrels for maturation until bottling the following August. Notes of brambly berries, Christmas tree, and violets complement the structured tannins, and we look forward to seeing this one evolve further in bottle.
