Profile & Story

Abbadia Ardenga is a historic winery located in the heart of the Val d'Orcia, along the ancient Via Cassia and the famous Via Francigena, just a few kilometers from Montalcino. Founded around the year 1000 as a monastery, this estate passed through the centuries until it became part of the possessions of the noble Piccolomini family, the family that gave birth to Pope Pius II. The Church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, with its elegant Romanesque architecture and frescoed crypt, still bears witness to the spirituality and history of that era. Today, the winery is owned by the Society of Executors of Pie Dispositions of Siena, a medieval institution that safeguards the entrusted estates by providing assistance, culture, and support for the community. Even the agricultural activity reflects this mission of assistance and charity: the company's proceeds are reinvested in social welfare and solidarity services, particularly for the elderly (nursing homes and assistance) and by restoring value to the city through the management of cultural heritage (museums) and the provision of scholarships. The property covers over 900 hectares, of which about 12 are planted with vines, mainly Sangiovese for the production of Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino. The vineyards, set in a hilly landscape of great scenic beauty, benefit from a favorable microclimate that allows the grapes to ripen slowly and completely, giving the wines balance, elegance, and structure. The historical memory of the estate is preserved in a cellar-museum that preserves evidence of the agricultural and oenological evolution of the territory. The historical memory of the estate is preserved in a cellar-museum, where agricultural history is intertwined with the oenological history of the territory. The production philosophy is based on sustainable viticulture, with attention to natural soil and environmental management, and unique care for each vine, from pruning to manual selection of the grapes. In the cellar, vinification is carried out using traditional techniques combined with modern technologies, aging in wood, and long periods of rest in the bottle, designed to enhance the territorial identity of Sangiovese and ensure the longevity of the wines. Abbadia Ardenga thus presents itself as an authentic interpreter of Brunello di Montalcino, capable of combining tradition, agricultural vocation, and social mission in a production that expresses elegance, depth, and continuity over time.

Tasting Notes

Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Piaggia from Abbadia Ardenga is a classic, structured Tuscan red made from 100% Sangiovese. It shows an intense ruby-red color with complex aromas of ripe red fruits, berries, and light spicy, balsamic notes. On the palate it is full-bodied, warm, harmonious and balanced with firm tannins and an elegant, long finish. The wine comes from grapes grown on the well-exposed Piaggia vineyard and is aged in Slavonian oak before further bottle maturation. It pairs beautifully with rich dishes like roasted red meats, game, and aged cheeses.

Pairing Recommendation

This wine pairs best with robust and flavorful dishes that match its structure and intensity. It is an excellent match for roasted or braised red meats, such as beef, lamb, or wild game. It also complements dishes with truffles, mushroom-based recipes, and rich meat sauces. Aged cheeses, especially Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano, are a perfect pairing as well. Overall, it is ideal for elegant, hearty meals and special occasions.
