JAX was founded in 1996 by father and son David and Trent Jackson, beginning with a ten-acre dry-farmed vineyard in Calistoga. The Y3 label, introduced in 2006, is named for the cattle brand ("Y3") from the Jacksons' grandparents' Australian ranch, Yarrayne, honoring three generations of the family's farming heritage. The Chardonnay comes from a single pedigreed vineyard site in Carneros, fermented in French concrete tanks and aged in barrels three-plus years old to sharpen mineral character and showcase terroir.
