Profile & Story

Channing Daughters Winery was founded in 1982 by Walter Channing, a venture capitalist who planted the first Chardonnay in Bridgehampton on New York's South Fork, and named the estate for his wife Molly and daughters Francesca, Isabella, Sylvia, and Nina. Rather than following the Bordeaux varieties common on Long Island, Channing and viticulturist Larry Perrine chose to experiment with Italian grape varieties. Winemaker Christopher Tracy, at the helm since 2001, now produces roughly 14,000 cases a year across more than three dozen cuvées. This Ramato follows the old Friulian tradition of fermenting Pinot Grigio on its skins, using fruit hand-picked from Bridgehampton and the North Fork, fermented on its skins with ambient yeast for nineteen days, and aged eight months in older French and Slovenian oak puncheons.

Tasting Notes

Star-bright in color, somewhere between electric orange and burnished copper, the wine offers aromas and flavors of honey, brown spices, chamomile, dried apricot, pear skin, tropical citrus, Earl Grey tea, baked apple, caramel, and peach, with balanced acidity and a medium-plus body that carries a long finish.

Pairing Recommendation

Pairs well with hard cheeses, charcuterie, and fish, chicken, or pork preparations built around spices, nuts, grains, or squash — exotic, lightly spiced, and earthy dishes work marvelously with this wine.
