Profile & Story

Madson Wines was founded in Santa Cruz in 2018 by winemaker Cole Thomas together with viticulturist Ken Swegles and Abbey Chrystal. Thomas came to wine through organic farming, working at Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard before further apprenticeships in Australia's Mornington Peninsula and New Zealand's Central Otago, where he absorbed a restrained, site-first approach to winemaking. At Madson, the guiding philosophy is to let the vineyard and coastal-mountain climate lead, using organic farming, whole-cluster fermentation, native yeasts, and aging in predominantly neutral French oak to keep the cellar's imprint light. "Calcaire" is a Chenin Blanc from the Cienega Valley in San Benito County, named for the limestone (calcaire) soils of the site.

Tasting Notes

A minimal-intervention Chenin Blanc from limestone soils, typically taut and mineral-driven, with orchard fruit and citrus character shaped by native-yeast fermentation and neutral-oak aging.
