Profile & Story
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has farmed the heights of Clavin, on the northern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as a single family estate since 1905. The 20-hectare vineyard sits in one block on north-facing slopes, farmed under Demeter biodynamic certification with an emphasis on traditional practice and "the good sense of the farmer." The Clavin Côtes du Rhône comes from a 5.5-hectare parcel of old vines (averaging 85 years) planted to Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Bourboulenc, Clairette, and white Grenache, hand-harvested with a double selection, fermented naturally without additives, and aged 18 months in foudre before bottling unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Notes
Critics have singled the wine out for its power and complexity: Robert Parker called it "possibly the greatest Côtes du Rhône I've ever tasted," while Josh Reynolds noted it "can stand up to plenty of Châteauneufs in terms of power, complexity and ageworthiness."
