Profile & Story
Michael Cruse founded Cruse Wine Co. in Petaluma in 2013 after building a reputation in California sparkling wine — he started the acclaimed Ultramarine project in 2008 after teaching himself traditional-method winemaking from an 1899 French manual. Cruse Wine Co. draws on sites across California's North Coast, from Napa and Sonoma to Mendocino and Contra Costa, with the goal of wines that are fruit-driven, fresh, and serious; Cruse was named San Francisco Chronicle Winemaker of the Year in 2016. Rancho Chimiles Valdiguié has been made continually since 2013 from Terry Wilson's Rancho Chimiles vineyard in Wooden Valley, a cooler pocket of southern Napa Valley against the Vaca Mountains.
Tasting Notes
A bright, almost neon ruby wine with classic Valdiguié aromas of rose petal, red currant, and fresh raspberry; the palate is graceful and light, with bright acidity, a candied fruit quality, and just the lightest hint of tannin on a long finish.
Pairing Recommendation
Best served lightly chilled; pairs well with charcuterie, roast chicken, or light summer fare.
