Profile & Story
Mongarda was founded in 1978 by Bruno Tormena in the Col San Martino district of Farra di Soligo, on the edge of Conegliano Valdobbiadene; the 12.5-hectare estate is now run by his son Martino, who took over in 2011. The Col Fondo comes from a 2.3-hectare single vineyard in the lieu-dit "San Gallo," planted in 1950 at 350–370 m with southern exposure and trained in the traditional Sylvoz/Doppio Capovolto system. Farming is organic/biodynamic with hand-harvest and biodynamic compost made from grape skins, vine cuttings, and grass-fed cattle manure. The wine is whole-cluster pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in 30 hL stainless steel, then re-fermented in bottle with must from the same vineyard and vintage — bottled undisgorged on the lees, fermented to dryness; about 30,000 bottles per year. Approximately 95% Glera with ~5% Verdiso/Bianchetta Trevigiana.
Tasting Notes
Lightly cloudy from the lees, with citrus, alpine herb, and green-apple aromas; lemon zest, Anjou pear, and a yeasty hint of bread crust on a vibrant, linear palate; crisp acidity and a dry finish.
