Profile & Story
Schramsberg Vineyards, North Coast. Blanc de Blancs, made from 100% Chardonnay, was the first wine Schramsberg produced in 1965 and was America's first commercially produced Chardonnay-based brut sparkling wine; it gained international recognition in 1972 when served by President Nixon at the historic Toast to Peace in Beijing. House style is dry and crisp: small lots of barrel-fermented wine (some completing malolactic fermentation) are blended with stainless-steel-fermented wine for added complexity, then aged on the yeast lees in bottle for about two years prior to disgorgement. Note: the producer's current product page at this link covers the 2023 vintage; the wine on this list is the 2020 vintage (see also the existing audit flag on this row's vintage entry, J14).
Tasting Notes
From the current (2023) release's official tasting notes: bright aromas of fresh apple, pineapple, lemon blossom, and Asian pear, with warm touches of lemon meringue, fresh bread, and pie crust; on the palate, clean acidity is driven by green apple, lemon zest, and limeade, with hints of lemon curd and sugar cookie supporting a juicy, quenching center and a tangy, clean finish.
Pairing Recommendation
Enjoyable as an aperitif by itself, or with fresh oysters and other shellfish, crab cakes, ceviche, and grilled sea bass; also good with lemon chicken and Thai curries, or served with aged Gouda and other hard cheeses, or soft triple-cream cheeses.
