Profile & Story
La Carraia was founded in 1988 in Orvieto, Umbria, through a partnership between the Gialletti family, viticulturists from the region, and the Cotarella family -- with Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy's most respected winemaking authorities, as co-owner and winemaker. This 100% Sangiovese is grown at 200-300m elevation on calcareous, rocky soil trained in Guyot, from vines averaging 18-22 years old, harvested late September into October. Vinification includes 16-20 days of maceration with frequent punch-downs and completed malolactic fermentation. 13% ABV.
Tasting Notes
An enjoyable, easy-drinking Sangiovese carried by lively freshness, with notes of plum, red rose, blackberry and white pepper; a certain tannic grip keeps the wine from being merely soft.
Pairing Recommendation
Recommended with tagliatelle al ragu, beef bites, and grilled meats.
