Bastianich Winery was founded in 1997, when Lidia and Joe Bastianich planted their first vineyards at Cividale del Friuli, in one of Italy's most gifted zones for white wine. The family's connection to the region reaches back to the 1970s and 80s, to meetings with Friuli's important grower families and to championing their bottles on the lists of the family's restaurants in the United States. Every vineyard has been estate-owned since 1997 and lies in two distinct pockets of the Friuli Colli Orientali: the warmer, more southerly hills of Premariacco, which give the fuller-bodied Cru wines, and the hills of Cividale, swept on the coldest nights by the bora and yielding greater aromatic intensity. The defining soil is ponca, the Eocene clay marl of these hills, rich in limestone and poor in organic matter. Vespa Bianco is the estate's flagship white and its Cru statement, grown on the warmer Premariacco hills and built on a base blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon. The name comes from the wasps ever-present around the ripening grapes.
