Fortemasso sits at Castelletto, in Monforte d'Alba. The name reads as strong, forte, as the soil of Monforte itself, and as solid as the masso, the rock that crowns the highest point of its vineyards. The Gussalli Beretta family bought the property in 2013 and has been setting new standards for Barolo there since, with five hectares of Nebbiolo for Barolo DOCG alongside a further 8.6 hectares of Dolcetto d'Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo and Barbera d'Alba. The project follows a clear philosophy of heavy emphasis on the vineyard and limited intervention in the cellar, so that each variety keeps its own features. The buildings were renovated to preserve their traditional character while the winemaking and ageing rooms were placed in an environmentally sustainable underground cellar, keeping the rural landscape intact above ground. The estate lies in the Langhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, and describes Barolo Castelletto as the wine that most represents Fortemasso.
