Profile & Story

Cantina Santa Maria La Palma is a growers' cooperative at Alghero, in the Nurra district of north-west Sardinia. Its origins lie in the post-war Agrarian Reform, when land in the Nurra was reclaimed and distributed to farm workers; in 1959 a hundred of those growers formed the cooperative and founded the winery. There are no counts or marquises behind it, only families of winemakers and farmworkers given uncultivated plots near Alghero, and the estate now farms around 700 hectares of vines. Aragosta is its emblematic label and an ambassador for the territory at home and abroad, and the lobster on the front is the symbol of Alghero's cuisine. The fruit comes from selected vineyards on alluvial sand and limestone at 100 to 175 metres, from vines between ten and thirty-five years old, fermented about fifteen days in temperature-controlled steel and rested thirty days in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes

Straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections. The aroma is balanced and delicate, of white flowers and white-fleshed fruit. The palate is dry, vibrant, mineral and balanced, with a fresh, pleasantly persistent finish and a long note of almond on the aftertaste.

Pairing Recommendation

Fish dishes and particularly shellfish, and equally good as an aperitif. The lobster on the label is the symbol of Alghero cuisine, and it finds its ideal match in this Vermentino.
