Profile & Story

Damijan Podversic is a small estate in Gorizia, in Italy's Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, guided by winemaker Damijan Podversic's belief that nature does nothing uselessly and that wine is the poetry of the soil. Kaplja is a blend of Chardonnay, Malvasia, and Friulano sourced from four vineyard sites acquired between 1991 and 2008 - Gradiscutta, Monte Calvario, Piedimonte, and San Floriano - planted on Ponca and Opoka Marna/Arenaria soils at 110 to 140 meters altitude with south and southwest exposure, yielding 40 quintals per hectare.

Tasting Notes

Conceived as a symphony titled 'Drop' composed by three varietal voices, Kaplja lets each grape contribute its own character to the wine's overall harmony and balance from nose to palate: Friulano lends marked aromatic intensity, Malvasia carries that aromaticity through with continuity, and Chardonnay rounds out a wide, sapid, and long finish. The wine macerates for 60 to 90 days in large oak barrels, then ages three years in 20 to 30 hectoliter barrels followed by a further year resting in bottle. The producer recommends serving at 15°C (59°F) and notes that the sediment present is essential to keeping the wine alive and helping it age.
