Profile & Story

La Perdida is the project of winemaker and biologist Nacho Gonzalez in the Valdeorras region of Galicia, in northwest Spain. In 2011 he inherited a 70-year-old vineyard parcel called O Trancado from his grandmother, an event that sparked his move into winemaking; the name La Perdida ('the lost') refers to the fact that all of the estate's vineyards had at some point been abandoned before Nacho found and replanted them. He has since assembled roughly 30 old-vine parcels around Larouco, farmed organically and entirely by hand across about 5 hectares. His guiding principle is 'el mínimo es cero' - the minimum is zero - meaning no added sulfites or other enological products, and no filtering or clarifying; he avoids marketing his wines under the 'natural wine' label, preferring simply to call what he makes wine. O Pando is a 100% Godello from old, low-yielding vines in the Viña O Pando vineyard, organically farmed with biodynamic and mycological preparations on granite and clay soils. The hand-harvested, destemmed grapes are fermented with native yeasts in used barrels with about 5 days of skin maceration, then pressed into old amphora to finish fermentation and rest over the winter on the lees, before being bottled in spring without fining, filtering, or added sulfur dioxide.

Tasting Notes

Valdeorras Godellos made in this style are typically pale-hued with orchard fruit and citrus character, a textured, saline palate, and a mineral finish shaped by extended skin contact.
