Château du Chatelard is a historic estate in the Beaujolais crus, between Fleurie and Morgon (about 20km south of Mâcon); the property was rebuilt in the 18th-19th centuries as a 'poype' (a moated hilltop building), with vaulted cellars the only surviving trace of its 12th-century origins. The 27-hectare estate produces Beaujolais, Morgon, Fleurie and Moulin-à-Vent appellation wines. This Fleurie ('Les Vieux Granits') comes from vines up to 75 years old on eroded pink granite slopes in the north of the Fleurie appellation, southeast/south-facing. Vinification uses partial whole-bunch maceration for 12-16 days to extract tannin and complexity, followed by gentle pressing and eight months' maturation on lees. ABV is 13%.

Pairing Recommendation

Versatile with red meats (venison terrine, coq au vin, Lyonnais sausage), seafood (oysters with sausages, salmon tartare, lobster sashimi), and lighter fare like red fruit soup; serve at 14-16°C.
