Profile & Story
Tenute Neirano is a small family-run Piedmont estate belonging to the Sperone family, whose winemaking history traces to 1911 when Antonio Sperone founded the family firm in fortified wines and vermouth near Turin. In the 1980s the family purchased a 25-hectare property in the heart of Monforte d'Alba, prized for its compressed sandstone soils, and it is there that this Barolo is produced from vineyards over 40 years old. The wine is aged approximately 3 years in large oak casks, followed by around 6 months of bottle aging before release, in the traditional, structured style typical of Monforte d'Alba fruit.
Tasting Notes
James Suckling (92 points) describes the wine as "a restrained wine, showing licorice, red cherries, red currants and mint. Medium-bodied with firm, chalky tannins, crisp acidity and a slightly unfocused palate." Producer-side notes further describe it as dry, velvety and austere, with a bouquet of faded rose, violet, spice, and ripe fruit.
