Profile & Story

Ben Rye means daughter of the wind in Arabic, the name Donnafugata gave its Pantelleria passito for the wind that shapes everything on the volcanic island, where the Zibibbo vines grow low to the ground to survive it. The wine is made entirely from Zibibbo, part of the crop sun-dried in the island's traditional appassimento before being worked back into the fermenting must of the fresher fruit. It ages around five months in tank and at least sixteen months in bottle before release, and finishes at 14.5 percent alcohol with roughly 199 grams per litre of residual sugar against 7.9 grams per litre of total acidity and a pH of 3.87.

Tasting Notes

Golden with bright amber tints. The bouquet is intense and typical, with dried grapes, apricot, citrus fruit and candied orange peel followed by hints of Mediterranean maquis. Fruity and balsamic in the mouth with sweet notes of honey, intense and persistent, and marked by a good balance of freshness against the sweetness.

Pairing Recommendation

Biscuits, chocolate and jam or ricotta tarts, and equally at home with savoury foods such as tuna bottarga and mature or blue cheeses; also excellent on its own as a meditation wine, served at 12 to 14 degrees.
