Profile & Story
Maison Pierre Sparr Successeurs has been in Alsace since 1680, when Jean Sparr founded it. The house is based at Beblenheim with vineyards around Sigolsheim, farms about fifteen hectares of its own and works with growers on well over a hundred hectares more under long-term contract, and it has been a quality reference in the region since Pierre Sparr became one of Alsace's early estate bottlers. Grande Reserve is the house's classic AOC Alsace Riesling, dry and bottled at 13.5 percent alcohol; the estate gives it a drinking window of about five years and suggests serving it at 8 to 12 degrees.
Tasting Notes
Bright sun-yellow. The nose offers minerals, juicy mango, lemon peel, a touch of jellied banana and cardamom. The palate is juicy, mineral and fully aromatic, with ripe fruit acidity, plenty of extract, a well-balanced body and a long, spicy finish.
Pairing Recommendation
Sauerkraut, savoury tarts, grilled fish whether marinated or in a sauce, and fresh cheeses.
