Common Wealth Crush Co. was founded in 2022 on East Main Street in Waynesboro and is the first winemaking operation of its kind in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, part custom crush, part business incubator, part cooperative thinktank, with the stated aim of using each vintage to convey the time and place its grapes are grown. Brothers Tim and Ben Jordan started it with Pat Eagan, and Borgo's own wine director Lee Campbell is a partner in the venture, which is how a Virginia wine comes to sit on an Italian trattoria's glass list. The Illuminaqua is an ongoing exploration of Petit Manseng and its fermentation partners; the current release is 62% Petit Manseng, 37% Chenin Blanc and 1% Sauvignon Blanc at 13.7% alcohol, whose alcoholic fermentation finished inside a month while the malolactic took eight.
Tasting Notes
The producer describes a wine that works in layers, with oxidative notes alongside the fruit and richness and texture underneath. There is dense texture and a deep, layered flavour, but the creaminess of the malolactic stands in front of the lees character, and the Chenin Blanc takes it unexpectedly close to white Burgundy in profile.
