Girolamo Dorigo bought his first vineyards in the Colli Orientali of Friuli in 1966; his son Alessio now leads the estate, recognized for defending indigenous varieties -- Girolamo himself is credited with reviving the native red Pignolo -- and for avant-garde planting techniques. Schioppettino (also known as Ribolla Nera) is a native Friulian variety; bunches are selected one by one before destemming, vinified in stainless steel at controlled temperature, then aged 8 months in French oak barrels where the wine also completes full malolactic fermentation.
