Vouni Panayia Winery was founded in 1987 by oenologist Andreas Kyriakides, after fifteen years with Cyprus's Department of Viticulture and Oenology, making it the first private regional winery on the island. The estate sits near the village of Pano Panayia in the Paphos district, at close to 1,000 meters and surrounded by pine forest under the Troodos mountains, and works exclusively with indigenous Cypriot varieties — Xynisteri, Spourtiko and Promara among the whites, Ntopio Mavro, Maratheftiko and Yiannoudi among the reds. Plakota blends Ntopio Mavro with Maratheftiko, widely regarded as Cyprus's most noble red variety.
