Passopisciaro Passorosso Etna Rosso 2023
2023, Etna, Sicily, Italy
Profile & Story
Andrea Franchetti arrived on Mount Etna in 2000 as one of the first of the modern wave of producers on the volcano. Formerly labelled Passopisciaro, Passorosso is made from Nerello Mascalese blended across different altitudes and soil types, drawing on several contrade (crus) — Malpasso, Guardiola, Santo Spirito, Favazza and Arcuria — from vines 70–100 years old planted between 550 and 1,000 metres. The wine ages in large, neutral oak barrels and is unfiltered; from the 2014 vintage it carries the Etna Rosso DOC.
Tasting Notes
An interpretation of Nerello Mascalese that is bright, pure, red-fruited, mineral and herbaceous; with age it begins to lose colour and gains exotic aromas of camphor, sandalwood and spice.
