Koerner and Joan Rombauer settled in St. Helena, Napa Valley in 1972, gaining winemaking experience through a partnership at Conn Creek Winery before launching their own venture. Their first wine, a 1980 Cabernet Sauvignon, began humbly -- even fermented in Koerner's garage -- before the family built its own winery in 1982 and officially released its debut Cabernet and Chardonnay in 1984. Rombauer's guiding belief has always been to do everything possible to produce the best wines possible, pairing careful vineyard management across Carneros, Atlas Peak, Stags Leap, and the Sierra Foothills with barrel fermentation and modern technique. The winery's Pinot Noir extends that same estate-driven, quality-first philosophy to Carneros and Russian River Valley fruit.
