Profile & Story

Piaggia's Il Sasso Carmignano DOCG comes from the estate's own Il Sasso vineyard in S. Cristina a Mezzana, an area the winery considers one of the most interesting terroirs in the Carmignano appellation, planted on medium-textured clay and galestro soil at 250m elevation with south-west exposure using Guyot training. The wine is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, hand-picked and fermented in small containers with natural yeasts for maximum extraction, macerating on the skins 18-20 days. It then undergoes malolactic fermentation and about 12 months of aging in small French oak barrels, and is bottled unfiltered to preserve its organoleptic character.

Tasting Notes

Deep, intense ruby red in color, the wine is complex on the nose with notes reminiscent of forest-fruit jam, sweet spices, thyme, and cocoa, layered over cherry and marasca cherry with elegant balsamic notes. Full-bodied and enveloping on the palate, it shows the charming elegance typical of thoroughbred Sangiovese, with excellent balance between alcohol, acid, and tannin, closing on a persistent finish with a pleasant sweet, fresh, fruity follow-through.

Pairing Recommendation

It goes well with mature cheeses, red meat, and game.
