Profile & Story

Terre Nere Montalcino is a family-owned, organic boutique winery located in the southeast area of the Montalcino appellation, an area renowned for its ideal exposures and highly expressive Sangiovese. The estate produces 50,000 bottles per year, divided between Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello Riserva and Rosso di Montalcino. Our Rosso di Montalcino is produced from a selection of grapes grown in our “Ponte dei Falchi” vineyard and from the lower part of the “Vigna della Capanna,” where the soils are a mix of silt and clay, with stretches of iron-rich earth. This area yields a greater quantity of fruit, as it lies close to the woods and the river. In well-balanced vintages, it is perfect for producing our Rosso, a wine that shares the same soul as Brunello, yet with less complex features, expressing a fresher and more approachable character.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, it opens with fresh aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and pomegranate, followed by delicate floral hints of violet and subtle notes of Mediterranean herbs. Light touches of spice and a faint earthy nuance add depth without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, it is vibrant and well-balanced, with lively acidity and fine, silky tannins. The texture is elegant and approachable, offering flavors of ripe red berries, a hint of blood orange, and a gentle savory finish.

Pairing Recommendation

This balance makes it extremely versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with both meat and vegetarian dishes. With pasta, Rosso di Montalcino shines alongside tomato-based sauces. Its natural acidity complements classic dishes like tagliatelle with tomato and basil, pappardelle with mushroom ragù, or lasagna. Cheese pairings are particularly successful. Aged Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano, semi-aged cow’s milk cheeses, and even mild blue cheeses create a harmonious balance between saltiness and fruit. Legume dishes like lentil stew or Tuscan white beans also work well. Herb-roasted chicken, grilled pork, lamb chops, or traditional Italian meatballs all match the wine’s savory depth and gentle tannins.
