Profile & Story

Founded in the 19th century by the Franceschi family, Tenuta Il Poggione is one of Montalcino’s historic estates. Since the very beginning, the winery has believed in the potential of Sangiovese and in the unique vocation of its vineyards, introducing a modern approach to viticulture and clonal selection while preserving a strong link to tradition. Today the estate covers 600 hectares, including 140 hectares of vineyards and 70 of olive groves. Meticulous vineyard care is at the core of the estate’s philosophy: diversified agriculture, low yields, targeted cluster thinning, and constant monitoring of soil and plant health ensure quality even in challenging vintages. In 2022 the estate began its conversion to organic farming, achieving its first certified organic vintage in 2025. Environmental commitment also includes the use of photovoltaic energy and sustainable agricultural practices. Harvesting is entirely manual, and winemaking combines traditional methods with advanced technology. The winery, renovated in 2004, allows precise control of every stage, including submerged‑cap fermentation. Ageing takes place in large French oak casks stored five meters underground. Today Tenuta Il Poggione continues to blend heritage, research, and innovation to craft wines that authentically express the identity of Montalcino. Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino 2023 is crafted from Sangiovese grapes sourced from our estate vineyards, which boast a minimum age of 10years. These selected grapes undergo fermentation at controlled temperatures, employing the submerged cap technique. Following this meticulous process, our Rosso di Montalcino matures exclusively in large French oak barrels, ranging from 3,300 to 5,200 liters (872 to 1,374 US Gallons), for a duration of 12 months. Subsequently, it enters a bottle aging phase, further enhancing its character and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Intense ruby‑red colour with a vibrant depth. The nose opens with an expressive bouquet of ripe red berries - cherry, raspberry, and redcurrant - accompanied by subtle floral tones and delicate hints of spice that add refinement and complexity. On the palate it is full‑bodied and well‑structured, yet remarkably soft and harmonious, offering an enveloping entry and a long, graceful progression. The tannins are smooth, velvety, and beautifully integrated, supporting a lingering, balanced finish where the fruit returns with clarity and elegance.
