Profile & Story

G.D. Vajra farms at Vergne, above the village of Barolo. 'If only people knew how good Dolcetto is, how easy to digest, human, they would drink it every day,' says Aldo Vaira - and once upon a time Dolcetto was cultivated on prime vineyard land, just above the Nebbiolo plots. At Vajra it is still grown in sites of true vocation, a heartfelt homage to a wonderful and often overlooked heritage of Piemonte. This is 100% Dolcetto from estate vineyards ranging from 25 to 60 years of age, mostly on the western hills between the villages of Barolo and Novello, high-elevation sites carefully selected to preserve Dolcetto's elegance and natural vibrancy. In 1971 Aldo Vajra, then still a university student, was among the earliest to adopt organic farming in Piemonte, and the vineyards have been nurtured by grassing and spontaneous cover crop for almost fifty years. In 2024 the grapes were harvested between 11 and 26 September after one of the estate's most demanding growing seasons since 1972; vinification lasted an average of 15 days, the wine was racked twice before spontaneous malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, and it was aged for four months in stainless steel only to preserve its freshness and brightness, bottled on 23 April 2025 during the waning moon of spring.

Tasting Notes

The 2024 Dolcetto d'Alba displays a vibrant ruby-purple colour. On the nose it opens with an expressive burst of blueberry and a distinctly vinous character, layered with delicate floral undertones. On the palate the wine is generous and vibrant, with fine tannins and a juicy, mouth-watering core; red berries and liquorice thread through the mid-palate, while subtle hints of almond and a touch of cinnamon lend nuance and warmth. A classic expression of Dolcetto, full of charm and immediacy.

Pairing Recommendation

Vajra describes it as perfect for convivial meals and everyday enjoyment.
