Profile & Story

Champagne Dunoyer de Segonzac traces its roots to founder Philippe Dunoyer de Segonzac, whose family's connection to winemaking reaches back to the 13th century. The house is based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, a Premier Cru village on the Canal de la Marne, an area settled since the Iron Age, working from cellars beneath a garden on the Place du Grand Jard. It sources Chardonnay from surrounding Premier Cru vineyards, favoring parcels that show characteristics of both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and builds its wines around vintage character, minimal dosage, and extended lees aging, under the motto "Only good times." This Blanc de Blancs comes from the 2015 vintage, a year marked by an unusually hot, dry Champagne summer — drought from late May and heat waves from June to mid-August slowed the grapes' development, until rain in late August let the berries grow and a sunny close to the month brought rapid, even ripening. Harvest began in late August, with growers reaching the maximum legal yield of 10,000 kg per hectare region-wide. The wine is 100% Chardonnay from Pierry, a Premier Cru village, disgorged in July 2020 after nearly five years of cellar aging and finished at extra-brut dosage (12% alcohol, pH 3.13, total sugar 5.6 g/l).

Tasting Notes

In the glass, the wine shows a satin yellow color with green hues, a dynamic, regular effervescence, and a generous, creamy mousse that settles into a fine bead. The nose is delicate and full of finesse, opening on toasted and roasted notes with baked citrus and exotic fruit, hints of smoky herb and peat, and a spiced salinity, before turning toward mineral and minty notes of bergamot and ripe wheat — remaining remarkably fresh despite nearly five years on the lees. On the palate the wine is restrained and delicate at first, with a bright freshness and notes of candied orange and tangerine; the long lees aging has smoothed the effervescence into something particularly indulgent, while the extra-brut dosage keeps the style clean and gives it the generous energy typical of Chardonnay. Still youthful, the wine is just entering full maturity and shows real aging potential.
