Profile & Story

Fattoria dei Barbi is a family wine estate in Montalcino run by Stefano Cinelli Colombini, who continues the direction set by his grandfather Giovanni; born in Florence in 1956 to a Sienese family, Stefano took over management of the property in 1981 and has since expanded its wine exports to more than thirty-five countries while growing production from roughly 300,000 to 700,000 bottles a year, alongside the estate's grain, olive, dairy and other agricultural activities. The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is produced from 100% Sangiovese grown on the estate's south-facing vineyards at 300-500 meters altitude, on marl and alberese limestone soils. The wine undergoes cold pre-fermentative maceration at 16°C in a CO2-protected environment, followed by sixteen to seventeen days of alcoholic fermentation at 27-28°C; it then ages first in small-to-medium oak barrels and later in larger oak vessels for a total of two years, and is bottled four months before release.

Tasting Notes

The wine shows a brilliant ruby red color, with aromas of ripe red fruit — strawberry and raspberry — alongside light, freshly smoked spice, anise, heather and white pepper. On the palate it is well structured, large and enveloping, with tannins that are still slightly green and closed but very promising.

Pairing Recommendation

It pairs excellently with roasted or grilled red meats, game, venison, stewed wild boar, and mature cheeses.
