Profile & Story
Domaine Weinbach takes its name — 'wine stream' — from the small watercourse that runs through the property at the foot of the Schlossberg hillside in Kaysersberg, Alsace. The estate was founded in 1612 by Capuchin monks, sold as national property during the French Revolution, and acquired in 1898 by the Faller brothers, who passed it on to their son and nephew, Théo. Théo Faller became a leading figure in Alsatian viticulture and a driving force behind the region's Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée recognition. After his death in 1979, his wife Colette and their daughters Catherine and Laurence carried the estate forward — Laurence, a trained oenologist, refining the purity of the wines, and Catherine leading its commercial growth — and today Catherine directs Weinbach together with her sons Théo and Eddy, continuing the family's commitment to terroir expression and quality. This Riesling, labeled simply Vin d'Alsace, is a varietal bottling grown mainly around the Kaysersberg valley on sandy-silty soil over granite pebbles, a terroir that ripens early and lends the wine its aromatic complexity and concentration. The estate farms organically and biodynamically (certified by Ecocert and Demeter), keeps yields low through short pruning, and hand-picks the grapes at optimal maturity. The wine is gently whole-cluster pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in large, old, neutral oak vats — a vinification approach the estate applies consistently across vintages to preserve the terroir's character.
Tasting Notes
Domaine Weinbach's estate Riesling is typically dry to off-dry in style, showing white-blossom and citrus aromatics with a fine, penetrating minerality and lively acidity characteristic of the estate's granite-influenced Kaysersberg terroir.
Pairing Recommendation
The estate's importer recommends this Riesling with steamed shellfish, linguine alle vongole, crayfish salad, and grilled fish drizzled with lime, as well as with goat cheeses.
