Roberto Henríquez grew up in Concepción, the principal city of Chile's Bío-Bío region, inspired early on by an uncle who made wine on a small scale in the nearby Itata Valley. After studying agronomy and enology at the University of Concepción and working at large Chilean wineries, he traveled through Canada, South Africa, and France's Loire Valley, where working with natural winemaker René Mosse sparked his interest in biodynamic viticulture. At 29 he returned to Bío-Bío to rescue and showcase some of southern Chile's oldest vines, farming around six hectares based in Nacimiento, with vines in places over 200 years old. País Franco is made from own-rooted, ancient País vines growing 800 meters from the Bío Bío river, in a dry riverbed that once held the river's course.
