Profile & Story

Castro Ventosa has farmed organically in Bierzo's Valtuille de Abajo since 1752 and is the largest grower of Mencia in the DO, now guided by Gabriel Perez (of the Raul Perez family) since 2018 toward greater finesse. Retail listings of the base 'Castro Ventosa Mencia' correspond to the entry-level 'El Castro de Valtuille' Mencia Joven bottling: 40-60 year old vines on sandy/chalky soils at 1,700-2,000ft, fermented in stainless steel with no oak treatment for a brilliant, juicy style.

Tasting Notes

Expressive nose of violets, cherries and red/black fruit with a touch of graphite; medium-to-full-bodied palate with succulent red fruit, linear acidity and well-integrated tannins - a youthful, approachable style true to Bierzo Mencia.
