Profile & Story

In 1870, Giuseppe Cappellano, a pharmacist from Serralunga d'Alba with a shop in Turin, perfected the original recipe for Barolo Chinato, an aromatized wine first marketed as a medicinal tonic before it became an Italian classic. The Cappellano family's recipe remains a closely guarded secret handed down through the generations: aged Barolo is combined with an extract of china calissaya bark and around fifty additional herbs and spices, plus sugar and neutral spirit.

Tasting Notes

Regarded as one of the classics of Italian wine, it shows an equilibrium of contrasts and a gusto-olfactive complexity of remarkable, almost endless persistence — a great aromatic wine for quiet contemplation.

Pairing Recommendation

The producer notes it is capable of the notoriously difficult pairing with dark chocolate.
