Pereira D'Oliveira has made Madeira in Funchal since the nineteenth century, aging its wines in cellars dating to 1619 and maintaining one of the island's largest libraries of old, cask-matured Madeiras — wines so intense, as the house's American importer puts it, that they show why Madeira was once so prized. This Malvazia (Malmsey) was matured in cask before bottling as a vintage-dated 1990.
Tasting Notes
Malvazia, or Malmsey, is the richest and sweetest of the four classic Madeira styles, typically showing notes of dried fruit, allspice, cola and burnt sugar over a core of bright, balancing acidity.
Pairing Recommendation
Malmsey is a classic partner for spiced cakes and other desserts, and is especially good with chocolate.
