Profile & Story

Rare Wine Co., D'Oliveira's American importer, notes that the house has held on to many of its most famous vintages, building an irreplaceable stock of old wines whose intense, cask-aged character shows why Madeira was once so prized by earlier generations. This Verdelho was matured in cask for decades before being bottled as a vintage-dated 1932, one of the estate's small run of legendary old Verdelhos from the family's own São Martinho vineyards.

Tasting Notes

Verdelho sits between Sercial and Bual on the sweetness scale, medium-dry with a smoky, tangy intensity and firm acidity that only sharpens with long cask age.

Pairing Recommendation

Verdelho pairs classically with rich soups such as chestnut and truffle, and its smoky edge suits smoked or grilled fish.
