Profile & Story

Pereira D'Oliveira has made Madeira in Funchal since the nineteenth century, aging its wines in cellars dating to 1619 and maintaining one of the island's largest libraries of old, cask-matured Madeiras — wines so intense, as the house's American importer puts it, that they show why Madeira was once so prized. This Verdelho was matured in cask before bottling as a vintage-dated 1994.

Tasting Notes

Verdelho sits between Sercial and Bual on the sweetness scale, medium-dry with a smoky, tangy intensity and firm acidity.

Pairing Recommendation

Verdelho pairs classically with rich soups such as chestnut and truffle, and its smoky edge suits smoked or grilled fish.
