Profile & Story

Las Amapolas is the flagship Verdejo of Bodegas La Granadilla, founded in 2015 by the five Descalzo Matos siblings (Luis Alfonso, Roberto, Ana, David and Miguel) in the heart of the Rueda Denominacion de Origen. The winery farms 104 hectares planted on trellises between the Valladolid municipalities of Villaverde de Medina and Nava del Rey, at altitude around 812 meters, on stony soil rich in calcium and magnesium, under a continental Mediterranean climate with wide day-night temperature swings that preserve acidity and aromatics. Las Amapolas Verdejo is a blend of 93% Verdejo and 7% Sauvignon Blanc. Production follows a cold pre-fermentation maceration below 7C, gentle pressing, and a long, carefully controlled cold settling (debourbage) of the must to keep it clean and preserve varietal aromatics, followed by low-temperature fermentation (below 15C) to build aromatic intensity and fruit character. The winery farms organically and sustainably and states its carbon footprint has been positive over recent decades.

Tasting Notes

Straw yellow in color with greenish reflections, clean and bright. The nose shows tropical fruit aromas (lychee, mango) and stone fruit (apricot), with a hint of white flowers. On the palate it is fresh and balanced, with notes of peach and tropical fruit.

Pairing Recommendation

Perfect to accompany fish, seafood, smoked dishes, rice dishes, and white meats. Serve between 7C and 10C to enjoy its fullest expression.
