Profile & Story

Isidoro Polencic is a family winery in Plessiva, a locality of Cormons in the Collio, right on the border with Slovenia, now run by three siblings -- Alex, Elisabetta and Michele -- continuing work begun by their parents Isidoro and Anna, and before them by their grandfather (also named Isidoro). The family has worked this land since the 19th century, moving from bulk wine to estate-bottled wine in the 1970s. The estate's vineyards spread across Cormons, Ruttars, Plessiva, Novali, San Floriano del Collio, Mossa and Castelletto, on the marl-and-sandstone ('ponca') soils of Eocene origin characteristic of the Collio, under a continental climate of warm summer days and cool nights. This Friulano (Tocai Friulano) is DOC Collio, trained by French Guyot and Monocapovolto at a planting density of 4,000-6,200 vines per hectare, harvested in the second half of September. The grapes are left in contact with the must, pressed softly, and the free-run must is racked for about 12 hours before a slow fermentation in temperature-controlled (16-17 degrees C) stainless steel for 18-25 days, followed by several months of maturation on the lees in steel to build complexity, creaminess and ageing potential (10-15 years, per producer data sheet).

Tasting Notes

Intense, brilliant straw-yellow color with notable golden reflections. A truly complex, enveloping wine with bold fruity notes of pear, grapefruit and acacia alternating with intense balsamic and menthol notes. Grown on the estate's own hills, it shows a characteristic and intriguing finish of almond and yellow fruit. Very complex and mineral on the palate, with great structure that follows through to an excellent correspondence with the aromatics -- spiced, with a truly elegant almond finish.

Pairing Recommendation

Traditionally excellent as a pre-dinner aperitif, but particularly good with cold cuts, prosciutto and cheese. It also pairs pleasantly with seafood dishes such as soups or grilled fish, and with mushroom risottos.
