ArPePe takes its name from founder Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, who in 1984 refounded his family's winery in the Grumello subzone of Valtellina, Lombardy, now run by the fifth generation of the Pelizzatti Perego family under the motto 'il giusto tempo del Nebbiolo' - the right waiting time for Nebbiolo. The estate farms 13 hectares of Nebbiolo, locally called Chiavennasca, entirely by hand. ArPePe created the Rosso di Valtellina DOC in 2003, during a particularly difficult vintage, choosing to vinify the fruit as an early-drinking wine rather than sell it off in bulk - reasoning that grapes of little value for long aging could instead be 'ennobled in youth.'
