Profile & Story

Truchard Vineyards traces its roots to 1887, when Jean Marie Truchard emigrated from France and planted vines in Texas; his grandson Tony Truchard, a physician by training, later discovered Carneros - then dismissed as too cool and too dry for quality grapes - and in 1972 purchased an abandoned prune orchard there with his wife Jo Ann. What began as a grape-growing operation became an estate winery in 1989, and today Truchard farms roughly 280 planted acres across Carneros' rolling hills and varied soils, growing a dozen grape varieties including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Roussanne, Syrah, and Merlot. Truchard's Chardonnay, grown on vines 28 to 50 years old in the estate's cooler, marine-influenced sites, has been recognized repeatedly by the wine press, including 92 points from James Suckling for the 2024 vintage.
