Profile & Story

Caneva da Nani sits in the hilltop village of Guia, in the Valdobbiadene hills of the Veneto, where the Canello family has grown grapes for five generations and made wine officially since 1971. Massimo Canello now runs the six-hectare farm, having taken over from his father Giovanni, whose nickname 'Nani' gives the winery its name; 'caneva' is Venetian dialect for a shady spot to sit and drink wine. Farming is organic though not certified, with no herbicides or synthetic pesticides, on mixed clay and limestone at 350-400 m, where the steep slopes force all work to be done by hand. Guia was one of the villages where a small collective of growers, Caneva da Nani among them, revived the old col fondo style in the 1970s. The 'Vin Col Fondo' is 100% Glera: natural fermentation in cement, then bottling in early spring with residual sugar and living yeasts so the wine re-ferments in bottle at 15-18 C without added sulphur. After roughly 60 days the yeast settles and stays as the sediment that gives the style its name. Because the wine is sealed under crown cap it cannot be sold under the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Superiore DOC, even though the vineyards lie inside that zone.

Tasting Notes

The importer notes that the lees left in the bottle are what give this wine its characteristic aroma, texture and flavour, and that the family generally decants it to open up its mineral and floral side.
