Pepi Umathum is one of Austria's best-known winemakers and a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Burgenland's Neusiedlersee district. Rotburger - the traditional Austrian name for Zweigelt, a Blaufrankisch x St. Laurent crossing - comes from rocky, gravelly-soil vineyards farmed biodynamically with 20-40 year old vines. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and aged for a year in large, neutral Austrian oak foudres that preserve fruit purity rather than adding oak flavor.
