Founded in Beaune in 1731, Maison Bouchard Pere & Fils is one of Burgundy's oldest houses, with a domaine of some 130 hectares of crus and cellars in the underground galleries and bastions of the ancient Chateau de Beaune, ten metres below ground. The Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Marconnets' vineyard owes its name to the Germanic tribe of the Marcomanni, who appear to have settled here in the 3rd century AD; Bouchard has owned vines here since 1791 and today harvests 2.32 hectares at the northernmost point of Beaune, where layers of grey, marly chalk give the wine distinction, character, elegance and bouquet. 100% Pinot Noir, hand-harvested and hand-sorted, with total or partial destemming, fermentation in small containers and a vatting of 7.5 to 20 days depending on the vintage, then 12 to 14 months in French oak, 30-40% new. The house says it will age well for 7 to 70 years and more.
