Profile & Story
Cristal was created in 1876 at the request of Tsar Alexander II, who asked Louis Roederer to reserve the house's best cuvee for him every year; the flat-bottomed, transparent lead-crystal bottle made for him gave the wine its name. It is produced only in the best years, from around 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay picked at perfect maturity across 45 plots in the house's Grand Cru vineyards of the Vallee de la Marne, the Cote des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims — some 80 hectares in all — then aged six years in the Roederer cellars and left a further eight months after disgorgement.
Tasting Notes
A remarkably balanced and refined champagne whose length is inimitable, with a silky texture and fruity aromas complemented by a powerful mineral quality with white fruit and citrus notes; it can be kept for over twenty years without losing freshness or character. Of this vintage, cellar master Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon writes that "this Cristal 2005 stands out from all other Cristal vintages due to its aromatic openness and typical 'Chardonnay' character."
