Calera Wine Company was founded in 1971 by Josh Jensen, who was inspired during his time working in Burgundy by mentors who stressed the importance of limestone soils to great Pinot Noir. Jensen purchased limestone-rich slopes at Mt. Harlan in 1974, in the Gabilan Mountains of California's Central Coast at roughly 2,400 feet elevation, releasing his first wine, 1,000 cases of Zinfandel, in 1975, followed by the estate's first Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir in 1977. The winery's name, Spanish for "lime kiln," reflects this geological heritage, and Calera describes its philosophy as "grounded in a deep respect for place," prioritizing patience, precision and balance over excess. The Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards across California's Central Coast and made in this same limestone-influenced, elegant house style of Pinot Noir for which Calera and Josh Jensen, honored as a Wine Spectator Pinot Noir Pioneer in 2013, became known.
