Foris Vineyards Winery was founded in 1971 when Ted Gerber purchased land in the Siskiyou Mountains near Cave Junction, Oregon, at a time when no wineries yet existed in the Rogue Valley, making Foris one of the region's pioneers; the winery, now farming the same land for over fifty years, calls itself "the Northwest's southernmost winery." Foris has cultivated its selection of Early Muscat grapes, the base of its Moscato, since 1976 in this alpine valley of the Siskiyou Mountains. In making the Moscato, the winemaker halts fermentation partway through to preserve the grape's natural sweetness while retaining the carbonation produced during fermentation, an approach inspired by the frothy Moscatos of Italy's Piedmont region. The resulting wine is exuberantly aromatic, with notes of white peach, pear, orange blossom and honeysuckle, delicately effervescent, low in alcohol, and balanced by bright acidity.
