Profile & Story

Pereira D'Oliveira is one of the oldest Madeira houses, founded in 1820 and still run by the same family — today its fifth generation, brothers Luis and Filipe D'Oliveira. Its cellars in São Martinho date to 1619, and the firm's own vineyards lie along Madeira's south coast just west of Funchal. D'Oliveira holds that Madeira ages best in cask, so its wines are kept in wood and bottled only as needed; tasters of the house's range have noted a distinctive style marked by powerful aromatics, lushness and viscosity, real structure, and a tangy, appetizing edge. The 5 Year bottling is the entry point into this style, aged the minimum period the house considers necessary before release.

Tasting Notes

A youthful, non-vintage house blend in the medium-dry style: amber-gold in color, with nutty, lightly toasted aromas and flavors of dried citrus peel, caramel and hazelnut, carried by Madeira's characteristic tangy acidity through a clean, warming finish.

Pairing Recommendation

Madeira's powerful acidity cuts through fat, making it a versatile match for fatty meats, creamy soups, custards, soufflés and rich cheeses.
