Profile & Story

Pereira D'Oliveira, founded in 1820 and still family-run through its fifth generation, is known for holding on to its old vintages rather than selling them off — a practice that has built one of Madeira's most historic private libraries. The house ages its wines in cask, distinguishing colheitas (a minimum of 5 years in wood) from frasqueiras (20 years or more), and its Malvasia — the grape behind the Malmsey style — is one of its classic varietal bottlings, made in the rich, lushly aromatic house style for which D'Oliveira is known.

Tasting Notes

Classic aged Malvasia (Malmsey) Madeira: dark amber to mahogany in color, with rich notes of dried fig, caramel, allspice and burnt orange peel, a lusciously sweet, viscous palate, and the bright, cutting acidity that keeps Madeira's richest style fresh through a long finish.

Pairing Recommendation

Malmsey is the richest of the Madeira styles and is classically paired with desserts and chocolate; its allspice, cola and sassafras character make it a natural match for spiced cakes and chocolate-based desserts.
