Pereira D'Oliveira, founded in 1820, has held on to an unusually deep library of old Madeiras rather than selling them off, ageing everything in cask under the house philosophy that Madeira develops best in wood. Terrantez is among the rarest grapes in its cellar: the variety nearly went extinct after phylloxera, and growers only began replanting it in the 1940s and 1950s, making old, cask-aged bottlings like this one increasingly scarce.

Reviewed in the Chicago Tribune, this 1988 D'Oliveira Terrantez was described as 'like liquid fruitcake' — a combination of dried candied fruits, brown baking spices and walnuts, with the color of amber maple syrup and a gold-orange edge; the texture is soft and creamy, 'clipped shut by acidity just like a squeeze of lime.'
